GARBAGE ON TEXAS BEACHES
Have you ever noticed the garbage on Texas Beaches? How many times have you seen a piece of garbage on the ground and walked past it? I was occasionally guilty of doing this when I was asked this question by a volunteer at a sea turtle hospital on South Padre Island. In the past, I would walk past garbage on the side of the road or the beaches because I didn’t want to pick up other people’s garbage with my bare hands. It grossed me out just thinking about it. Plus, where could I throw it away once I picked it up?
Once talking with this volunteer about how most of the sea turtles in the hospital ingest large quantities of plastic I started to gain some perspective. And these worries I was having before began to seem like small inconveniences that could be easily overlooked up against the bigger picture.
From here, we got ourselves a bucket and grabber stick and started to pick up garbage whenever we went on walks. While doing this, we noticed turtle bites in some of the garbage we picked up; you can tell because they look like little triangles. I was shocked by how many pieces of garbage had turtle bites in them.
GARBAGE ON BOCA CHICA
Chuck and I took a day and went out to Boca Chica Beach to pick up seashells and garbage. We must have picked up over 100 pieces of garbage. Luckily, there are garbage cans spread out all across the beach.
Our beaches are beautiful serene places that we all get to enjoy, whether it is a lake, river, or the ocean. I wish more people would take care of our beaches and oceans and the rest of the planet. It is just as easy to put something in the garbage (or recycling) as it to throw it on the ground.
PLASTIC! MORE PLASTIC! DID I MENTION PLASTIC!
We found shoes, plastic bottles and bags, and more plastic. Did I mention plastic! There was so much of it and a lot of it had bite marks from the sea turtles. Please recycle!
SOUTH PADRE ISLAND ADOPT A BEACH DAY – CLEAN UP GARBAGE ON TEXAS BEACHES
On South Padre Island they have several adopt-a-beach days. I know that Andy Bowie Park helps put one on. Let’s shout out to all those who help clean up the garbage on our beautiful planet.

If you are interested in helping clean up any garbage on Texas beaches there are plenty of volunteer opportunities. Ask the local Chamber of Commerce or call the city offices to find out when their next clean up date is. If you are located somewhere else in the world and want to volunteer in your hometown that awesome too! With everyone working together we can make a big difference.
